About Us:

We base our teaching philosophy on these two concepts: we believe everyone should know how to swim and that every child should be taught respect for the water and appropriate behaviors for staying safe around the water.

Oak City Swim School is located in East Raleigh and here for swimming needs! We are a private, indoor school that teaches all levels of swimmers! We focus on water safety skills to keep everyone safe and work with everyone at every level. Our classes range from parent and tot where we train the parents, as much as the children, in water safety skills and how to self-rescue; to adults looking to tweak their strokes to become more comfortable swimmers. The goal of our program is to help each student master life-long swim skills, develop good judgement around the water, and appreciate the true value of regular vigorous physical activity in staying healthy in body and mind.

Our indoor pool is heated year-round to 88 degrees and perfect for those just getting started! With the shallow end starting at 3 feet, we welcome all those that might not know how to swim or might be tackling a long-harbored fear. We also believe that swimming is for everyone and love working with people that have different abilities, physical or not. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to swim, or how to swim better, we’re here for you!

Our Staff

Our staff is trained to teach water safety lessons based on a developmentally appropriate curriculum for swimmers 6 months through adult. Our training program is 20 hours of classroom work and 40 hours of in-water training. Each candidate must pass a written exam and a practical exam in order to be assigned classes. Our staff is provided on going training to enhance and develop their teaching skills. All staff is trained to respond to pool emergencies, first aid, CPR and pool safety. To really understand our history, we have to go back beyond the building of our facility.

In 1984, Dave Farrar and Margie Rhodes started a SCUBA store with the focus of traveling and named it Gypsy Divers. In 2001, they finished the building we currently are in, Gypsy Divers Aquatic Center, and decided to start offering swim lessons. With the pool kept at 88 for the comfort of the divers, it was the perfect pool to offer water safety classes and help people of various ages conquer their fear and learn to swim!

In 2019, they decided to retire and sold their business to one of their managers, Billy Harloff, who had been an instrumental part of the building since 2011. With our Swim Director, Jackie Sheffield, they have not only kept up the high quality and joy Dave and Margie had started, but have grown beyond what we could have imagined. So, in 2021, we rebranded ourselves!

Group/Private Lessons Schedule

Austin was able to apply his water safety skills this summer at the beach. He got caught up in a little current, he remembered to float, don’t panic and wait til he was pushed back out of the current. His lessons saved his life. I am so proud of him."

Happy Client

All 3 of my kids have taken lessons over the years. We always come back each year for a few months so that they can refresh their skills- now my oldest is on the year round swim team.
